BECAUSE IT’S THE MOST INCREDIBLE, TRANSFORMATIONAL, DRAMATIC, INTANGIBLE MEDIUM TO PLAY WITH.
I get asked this question a lot and depending who you ask, you’ll get a very different but somewhat similar answer. I can get into all the technical stuff and totally geek out for you but we’ll leave that for later blogs. For me, lighting is the most powerful element of all the construction elements. It is creative expression, it is technical, it is powerful, it is emotive (and I also enjoy how people think I’m weird when my eyes glaze over as I mentally paint a lighting scene together in my imagination… it’s quite a mad hatter moment!). Not only that, but I do believe that when you invest in lighting on a project, you’re only enhancing not only the space and user experience but also the value of your project. You can spend millions on the architecture, interiors and construction, but put in crappy lighting and you’ve wasted your money.
Coming from a light art background, I’ve been fortunate enough to play with infinities, bend beams, use colour saturation to influence mood, create drama with light vs dark, project onto various surfaces, work with TV production and live media elements. Now that architectural lighting is my thing, working in an incredibly collaborative way with architects, interior designers, engineers, electricians, builders and suppliers, brings an element of problem solving and psychology in addition to creating spaces that resonate in an emotive response to the end user is just as magical to me; the play of light on materials, the way we can move people through space, the intricate little details… it’s all rather deliciously curious.
I’d love for you to come and explore the world of lighting with me to transform your upcoming project. Send me a little DM here.
