Mona St Foyer
The Concept
The lighting design for the Mona Street Foyer aims to deliver a welcoming and memorable first impression for patrons and guests of the Bankstown Sports Club and Mercure Hotel. The scheme is crafted to integrate intuitive wayfinding within a space bathed in natural light, ensuring seamless navigation and an elevated guest experience.
Organic forms were embraced to harmonize the venue’s irregular floor plan, establishing a tranquil and inviting atmosphere. Elevated ceiling heights and suspended design elements enhance the double-height volume, allowing daylight to permeate and animate the space throughout the day.
A neutral base palette, enriched by dramatic textures and tonal variations, is highlighted by ambient lighting that accentuates the foyer’s materiality and depth. High-contrast black accents and polished surfaces are juxtaposed with the tonal base, creating a timeless yet theatrical effect that resonates with both the Mona Street and Restwell Street lobbies.
The lighting strategy includes recessed downlights for general illumination, custom ceiling-
mounted feature rods at the sign-in point, and uplighting to timber screens and curtain wall features. Integrated joinery and skirting lighting, as well as dedicated pinspot and accent lighting, ensure both functional clarity and visual drama—guiding guests intuitively while celebrating the foyer’s architectural character.
