My Egyptian Heritage & Light
As I get ready to walk the vibrant streets of Cairo during Design Week, I’m reminded of how deeply heritage and history shape not only the spaces we inhabit, but the creative lens through which we view the world. Being Egyptian-Australian, my journey in lighting design is a celebration of both ancient tradition and contemporary innovation—a bridge between the timeless beauty of Middle Eastern architecture and the playful curiosity that defines CuriousLabs.
Egypt’s relationship with light stretches back millennia. In ancient times, Egyptians harnessed sunlight through clever architectural orientation—temples and tombs were designed to catch the rising sun, filling sacred spaces with golden rays that symbolized rebirth and divinity. Oil lamps and torches cast dramatic shadows on intricate carvings, creating an atmosphere of reverence and storytelling. Light was more than functionality; it was a spiritual and artistic element, shaping rituals and daily life alike.
Today, modern Egyptian lighting design continues this legacy, blending tradition with technology. From dynamic LED installations in bustling cityscapes to the soft glow of lanterns in historic districts, there’s a constant dialogue between past and present. Contemporary designers draw on ancient principles—like harnessing natural light and playing with shadow—while embracing innovation to create spaces that feel both timeless and fresh.
The Middle East, and Egypt in particular, is a living tapestry of stories etched into stone, shadow, and light. From the golden glow of lantern-lit alleyways to the grandeur of historic mosques and palaces, every detail holds a story. My work draws inspiration from these layers of culture—honoring the craftsmanship of the past while reimagining it for modern spaces.
There’s something uniquely powerful about returning to my roots, collaborating with local creatives, and exploring new ways to infuse history with fresh energy. By blending my Egyptian heritage with a global perspective, I hope to create lighting experiences that spark emotion and connection—bringing a sense of wonder to both familiar and new environments.
In every project, I strive to let history shine through, proving that heritage isn’t just something we preserve—it’s something we live, reinterpret, and celebrate every day.
