A Wellbeing Approach to Lighting Postgraduate Learning Spaces
There’s a moment I watch for in a well-designed hospitality space. It’s not the first impression. It’s quieter than that. Someone puts the phone away. Their shoulders drop. They turn toward the person next to them. The room has done its job; not by demanding attention, but by releasing it.
Postgraduate rooms need the same release.
The same space might hold a seminar at 11, a research group at 3, and one part-time student still writing at 9. Most buildings light all three the same way: one flat setting, all day, built for an average user who doesn’t exist. The light stays managerial. Even. Cool. Functional. And then we wonder why students don’t linger, why collaboration feels forced, why the evening writer never quite settles.
Light isn’t just there so people can see. It’s one of the few things in a building you can change without moving walls. Before anyone has assessed the furniture or the layout, the body has already decided how safe and how social the space feels. Warm, lower, directional light says gather here. Even, overhead, cool light says keep moving. Most educational spaces default to the second.
Wellbeing as cognitive load
Soft finishes and a lounge corner help, but postgraduate study demands sustained focus under pressure, often switching between reading, screens, discussion and presentation in the same hour. A glary, chaotic room forces the brain to filter the environment before it can do the actual work. That filtering costs attention. Better lighting reduces the cost so more of it goes on the thesis rather than coping with the room.
This is hospitality thinking applied to learning. Connection – whether it’s between people or between a person and their work – can’t be forced. It can only be invited. The room either supports presence or competes with it.
Postgraduate life is often solitary, part-time or evening-based. Spaces that allow small, casual contact and a sense of belonging help people cope. Cold, disorienting or relentlessly uniform ones make isolation worse. Daylight, in particular, tends to improve mood and reduce stress.
Pockets instead of partitions
Treat the floor plate as a landscape of different modes – focus, collaboration, recovery, rather than one room needing one lighting answer.
A pocket doesn’t need a wall. It can be a calm corner for deep reading, a brighter table where faces are easy to see and group work feels natural, or a softer edge where someone can sit without leaving the space. Students keep choosing daylit corners and window seats when they’re given the option. The better designs lean into that preference: brighter, open zones near the perimeter for energy, quieter pockets further in for private work.
There’s a cognitive reason this works. Constantly filtering a busy, uniform environment drains the directed attention needed for hard thinking. A calmer visual pocket next to a livelier one gives that attention somewhere to recover. In hospitality terms, it’s the difference between a room that keeps you on display and one that lets you inhabit a corner as if it were yours for a while.

Layers and time of day
Ambient, task and accent lighting remain the basic toolkit. A room used from 9am to 9pm needs a fourth layer: time.
Cooler, brighter light closer to daylight supports alertness earlier in the day. The same settings become a problem later. High light levels into the evening fight the body’s wind-down and risk leaving people wired without genuine alertness. Building standards have started to catch up. WELL now sets daytime thresholds for how alerting light is to the body clock and recommends lower levels in the evening.
Preference and performance often pull in different directions. Students frequently work more efficiently under cooler, brighter light while rating warmer, lower light as more comfortable. That gap is the case for tunable systems rather than one fixed scene.
Collaboration zones need brighter, more even light that makes faces legible and keeps energy up. Focus zones need controlled contrast, local task light and a quieter background. The change between them should be gradual. Sudden shifts add sensory load. Leave some shadow in the room. Let the light feel for the people in it, not for the architecture to be seen.
Designing the evening, not just turning lights on
By evening, tolerance for visual stress is usually lower. Students arrive tired; after work, caring responsibilities or a full day of classes. A room locked in daytime high-energy mode can feel clinical when people need it to feel calmer.
The same space needs two identities: a crisp day mode and a warmer, lower, more locally supported evening mode, with a designed transition rather than an abrupt switch. That is what lets one room serve a noon seminar and a 9pm solo writer without either feeling like an afterthought.
In hospitality we already know this. The lighting that works at 7pm is not the lighting that works at 11pm. The same honesty is useful in learning spaces.

Sensory respect, not special treatment
People experience light differently. Some are highly sensitive to glare or flicker. High brightness overstimulates others. Sharp contrast between bright and dark areas unsettles some. Long runs of linear light or busy patterns can become genuinely distressing over time.
Nulty’s 2023 report on neurodiversity is direct about this: high contrast can disorient, high illuminance is a frequent issue for people with ADHD, and continuous bright linear fittings can distress some users. The answer is not one “comfortable” setting — there isn’t one. It is variation as the baseline: high-stimulus zones paired with calmer ones nearby, real local control where possible, quiet muted areas for respite, and gradual rather than jolting transitions.
Research with neurodivergent postgraduate students and staff keeps flagging the same barriers: harsh cool-white ambient lighting, glare, and lack of control. Differing light levels and quieter pockets make sustained work more feasible.
This is simply good hospitality. You don’t design a venue for one ideal guest. You design so different people can find a place that feels held.
What it looks like on the ground
Most of this is zoned, dimmable, tunable lighting planned in from the start rather than bolted on later. Light the activities rather than the room, so collaboration, focus and recovery each have a distinct character. Let the light shift across the day; cooler and brighter in the morning, cool but comfortable through core hours, warmer and lower by evening, with a gradual transition instead of a hard switch. Give people local control through task lights and dimming at the desk so the default scene is never the only option. Treat daylight as the anchor layer, managed with shading so it does not become another glare problem. Place calm pockets near livelier ones rather than tucking them away as an afterthought, and keep changes gradual, especially at thresholds people cross often.
The real question is not “is this room bright enough?” but “how many different states does this room need to hold in one day, and does the light know that?”
When lighting is treated as flexible, time-aware and respectful of sensory difference, postgraduate spaces stop being one-size-fits-none environments. They start doing the quieter work that good hospitality has always understood: creating the conditions where people can be present. The morning seminar, the afternoon group discussion, the late-evening stretch of writing when everything else has gone quiet. Get the light right and the room stops competing with the student.
