DESIGN, SO I CAN SEE YOU.

November 2025: Cairo Design Week revealed itself as an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city in an entirely new light, embracing its pulse, rhythm, and layers.  Walking the vibrant streets of Cairo and exploring its diverse districts, one cannot help but be captivated by the art, architecture, scents, and the rich history that permeates the air. It is an experience that touches the soul.

I have always been fascinated by design festivals that not only showcase creativity but also foster cultural dialogues. Playing on Socrates’ idea that expression is what makes us visible, the works united under the campaign “Design, So I Can See You”. The festival spanned three thoughtfully curated districts—Heliopolis, Zamalek, and Downtown. Each with a distinct interpretation of visibility and expression, a scene confident in its history and welcoming of reinvention.

Heliopolis: Embracing Layers

In Heliopolis, where Art Deco and Neo-Islamic buildings frame contemporary installations, the overarching theme “Second Skin” offered a thoughtful exploration of texture, memory, and the layered identity of Cairo. Merging the past with modern design elements, the district beckoned visitors to contemplate the depth of the city’s heritage and its evolving identity.

Zamalek: A Sensory Journey

The district of Zamalek focused on sensory experiences—spaces that spark curiosity and encourage conversation. Iconic venues opened their doors to immersive exhibitions, examining design as the interplay between sound and silence, movement and stillness, tradition and innovation. This exploration of sensory perception invited participants to truly engage with their surroundings, crafting a dialogue that transcended traditional design boundaries.

Downtown: A Human-Centric Approach

Downtown emerged as a living laboratory for empathy and context, celebrating history with intention. The theme “Toward a More Human Design Language” examined how design can ethically and emotionally respond to the layered realities of urban life. In this energetic space, designers demonstrated that architecture could serve as a powerful medium for connection, fostering a sense of community amidst the hustle and bustle of city life.

Cairo Design Week 2025 was a remarkable showcase that underscored the importance of dialogue between past and present. As an international designer, I found immense inspiration in the innovative works of local designers and their shared commitment to sustainability. This event elevated the visibility of Egyptian design on a global stage, reaffirming the power of design as a universal language that bridges divides and fosters connections.

As I reflect on the vibrant exchanges in Cairo, I look forward to seeing how these influences continue to shape the design landscapes.
